Before you read this article on buying guitar effects pedals you might want to read Part I of the Buying On eBay series which gives a general overview on buying from eBay as well as some specifics to buying guitars. In this post I am just going to dive right into the specifics on buying guitar effect pedals on eBay.
I personally think that effects pedals are the easiest guitar gear to buy on eBay and have the least risk involved. Why? Well for one most guitar pedals do not cost close to as much as a guitar or an amp. So even if you did end up getting scammed it is not as high of a risk as shelling out $500+ dollars.
Second, one of the main reasons people buy a guitar or amp from is store is because the like the particular feel of that exact guitar or amp, when you buy an effect pedal in the store, you normally try out a demo pedal and if you like it you take home a different pedal than the one you tried (in most cases). So if you can save some great money by buying that guitar pedal on eBay, why not? It will sound the same anyways.
Also, one of the really big advantages to buying guitar pedals on eBay is that if you don’t end up liking it, you can almost always turn around and resell it on eBay for around the same price you paid. It is a much bigger hassle to resell a guitar or amp on eBay. I know people who just buy new pedals all the time on eBay just to try out and then resell them if they don’t like them. But if you were to buy a pedal new from the store and then sell it on eBay, chances are you will lose a bit of money.
When it comes to buying guitar gear on eBay I think effect pedals are the place where people with any eBay experience can get involved and not worry too much on having a bad experience. All the pedals I currently own I bought on eBay and I plan on getting another one at the end of this month (maybe the BBE Soul Vibe).
