For this week’s Great Guitar Video I want to show you one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite shows from one of my favorite guitarists—Texas Flood by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Live at the El Mocambo. I own this DVD and it is one of the best shows I have ever seen. The guitar on this DVD is unreal and I would say it is a must have for any SRV fan, or blues guitar fan (maybe even every guitar player).

I love your site and I find it very informative, fun and quite easy to navigate.
This DVD is a must to have to complete any guitar/music lovers collections. Did you know that the El Mocambo is in Toronto? My old boss was at that show and he said that it was unreal to be there and witness a great guitar clinic right in front of him. The club is very small and intimate plus had character up the ying yang!

Don’t get me wrong, I love Stevie Ray…. but I think sometimes he is a bit too “rich” in his jamming. It’s like he’s at level 11 for long periods throughout a show (which is no small feat in itself….I honestly respect that). I have several of his DVDs, and like a rich meal, I can only have so much before I turn it off. Robert Cray…. now there is a blues legend I can listen to for hours and not get tired of it….but then again he’s doing a lot more than just playing his guitar over standard blues progressions.
I feel the same way about the genius of Frank Zappa. He is probably one of the most incredible “rock” musicians who ever lived in so many respects…. but I can only take his stuff in moderation.

I here what you are saying. I don’t totally agree with it, but i can understand where you are coming from. SRV does play a lot more notes than, say, B. B. King. But i think people tend to equate as him having less “soul” and more just trying to play fast. I disagree with that point, but i can understand why people who love the greats may think that. But Buddy Guy plays like that some time too and people don’t question his soul…

I didn’t say that SRV doesn’t have soul and I certainly don’t question it. It’s more like he has an intensity level that is on full blast a lot of the time….
