Mark Goffeney – The Armless Guitar Player

Who says you need good hands to play the guitar? Not Mark Goffeney, a guitarist who was born without any arms. He serves as an inspiration to all those people who were told they couldn't do it, that with determination and a strong heart you can do anything. In Mark's case, it's the love of music.

This post was inspired by an article I read in Ability Magazine. It's pretty in depth about Mark's struggles growing up, finding jobs and working through his disability. It's a great story.

Great guitar video – Steve Vai, For the Love of God

I am not crazy about most shredders. There are only a few who I really like. I just think the whole speed and tapping bit gets a little tired and tasteless from time to time. But there are some shredders that I do like. And Steve Vai is one of them. I think his songs are tasteful and musically interesting. That’s why I chose this liver performance for this week’s great guitar video.

For The Love of God happens to be one of my favorite Vai songs. Even though this song is a little bit cheesy (the solo is a bit showy), there is still just something about it that I really like. Sometimes it is just fun to watch someone tear it up like that. For those of you not familiar with Vai or this type of music, you will see it is quite cool. His whammy bar tricks add a cool dimension to his playing. It’s hard to think that all this kind of music is because of Jimi Hendrix. But that’s for another time.

Great Guitar Video – The Allman Brothers, Jessica

The Allman Brothers are one of rock and roll’s greatest bands. And Jessica is one of their greatest songs (though there are many). This song showcases Duane Allman and Dicky Bett’s great chemistry and ability to harmonize with each other. Also note the use of arpeggios to create melodies and improvise. This is a great performance from way back in 1982. Enjoy!

Great Guitar Video – Leo Kottke – Medley: Part Two, June Bug, Train and The Gate

Here is a little bit of a change of pace from past weeks great guitar videos as this week I will be featuring an acoustic guitar player (for the first time). This is an incredible video of acoustic guitar virtuoso Leo Kottke playing a medley of songs, Part Two, June Bug, Train And The Gate, from German TV sometime in the early 80’s. Watch this 12-string master tear it up with his slide and fingerpicking magic!

Great Guitar Video – The Divided Sky, Phish

In light of the fact that I posted recently about Languedoc guitars now being available to the general public, I thought that for this week’s great guitar video I could show you one in action so you can see how sweet they really are. This week’s great guitar video is a 1994 performance in Glen Falls, NY by my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands- The Divided Sky by Phish.

Phish is known for their improvisational work and are one of the most famous jam bands of all time. Besides being a great improviser, Trey Anastasio, Phish’s lead guitarist and vocalist, is also a fantastic composer. Trey is a beast on the guitar (as you will see in the video) and always amazes me when I hear him play.

If you have never listened to Phish before now is the time to drop all your hippie/jam band stereotypes and give them a shot. If you want to play along you can get tabs to The Divided Sky at emilstabs.org. Enjoy the video:
